2003 - Helping Students Plan for Success Award Winner! |
Washington Dollars for Scholars recognized the outstanding efforts of the community volunteers from John Marshall High School Dollars for Scholars by selecting the chapter for the Helping Students Plan for Success Award. This award recognizes a Dollars for Scholars chapter that has provided creative approaches to ensure that students have more than just a scholarship to help them make a successful transition to college. Through the generosity of the Student Loan Finance Association, winners receive a $1,000 scholarship prize to award to a student in their community. A unique challenge at John Marshall High School, an inner-city alternative school in Seattle, is keeping students in school and helping them believe that education beyond high school is even a possibility. John Marshall High School Dollars for Scholars has paired up with Seattle Vocational Institute (SVI) and the Bright Futures Program to help John Marshall seniors co-enroll at SVI. Qualified students are able to attend SVI tuition-free and the chapter provides scholarships to cover additional expenses such as books, tools, uniforms, and lab fees. The chapter has even helped with childcare and transportation expenses when these have become barriers to the students attending school. Chapter volunteers also work closely with students to help them
complete their FAFSA and scholarship applications. By working
closely with the students, the chapter volunteers help them see a brighter
future more clearly, and help them create an action plan that the student
believes they can achieve. |
