2003 - Helping Students Plan for Success Award Winner!

Washington Dollars for Scholars recognized the outstanding efforts of the community volunteers from Mansfield Dollars for Scholars by selecting the chapter for the Helping Students Plan for Success Award.  This award recognizes a Dollars for Scholars chapter that has provided creative approaches to ensure that students have more than just a scholarship to help them make a successful transition to college.  Through the generosity of the Student Loan Finance Association, winners receive a $1,000 scholarship prize to award to a student in their community.

Ready-Set-Go is the imaginative title of the Mansfield Dollars for Scholars program to support college planning for the students attending their small, rural high school in the mid-section of our state.  Ready-Set-Go incorporates college planning and scholarship application instruction into the regular curriculum for students starting in their Sophomore year.  It also includes an annual College Financial Aid Seminar for parents and provides information to students on scholarship opportunities.

The 10 Mansfield High School graduates in 2003 received a combined $20,000 in scholarships (many from outside the chapter).  One student wrote, "Deciding and preparing for further education after high school is a very difficult and overwhelming process.  Mansfield Dollars for Scholars not only has provided scholarships but also has helped me in this very important step toward college."

2002 - Golden Tassel Award Winner!

Scholarship America recognized Mansfield Dollars for Scholars by selecting the chapter for the Golden Tassel Award.  This award honors and gives recognition to Dollars for Scholars chapters that have performed outstanding service to their communities.  Golden Tassel Award recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship for their chapter to be granted to a student chosen by the chapter.

Old Barn Fallen But Not Forgotten

Mansfield Dollars for Scholars had their creative juices flowing when they decided to use a dilapidated local landmark to raise money for scholarships.  An old barn near Mansfield was the focus of the chapter's contest and fundraiser.  Built sometime before the 1910s, the old barn was two stories tall and the biggest structure on the Matthiesen property.  But over the years the old barn was used less and less and began to fall apart.

When the barn seemed as though it would fall any day, Mansfield Dollars for Scholars jumped in to sponsor a "when will the old barn fall down" contest.  For five dollars, contestants could place their bets on a day they thought the barn would finally meet its demise.  But, to the surprise of all, it lasted months longer than anyone expected.  It even outlasted the contest!  Mansfield Dollars for Scholars ended up holding a drawing to determine a winner.  But, alas, on June 10, 2004 the barn gave in to heavy rains and high winds.

Mansfield Dollars for Scholars didn't stop there!  They turned the fall of the barn into another fundraiser.  Gene Goll, local chapter member and woodworker, began to fashion picture frames from the old rustic looking wood.  The weather stains, blackened knots, moss and nail holes appeal to people who want old wood frames.  Gene sells his frames and donates the proceeds to Mansfield Dollars for Scholars.  He has also begun to build shadow and trinket boxes with the old wood.
